Alicante to crack down on street prostitution

Alicante City Hall is cracking down on street prostitution in the city centre. They are working on a new local ordinance which will increase police presence in certain areas and allow greater control over the hostels used by local prostitutes. The hostels will be required to apply for a nightclub licence, in place of the accommodation licences under which they currently operate. Other measures include municipal programmes to help women who work as prostitutes to find other, legal, work. Businesses in the city centre say the women are brought in from the Vega Baja and return there after their nights work. Very few of them are Spanish nationals, they say. © typicallyspanish.com

Are Spain's taps running dry?

Madrid - Jose Maria Macias has been in the water business for the best part of four decades and cannot remember a drought as bad as the one Spain is suffering now. "We are going through a terrible drought. This is the third year of it and it's probably the worst there has been in Spain," he told Reuters in an interview on Friday. Macias is president of the Tagus water basin, which stretches across central Spain southwest to Portugal, supplying Madrid's 6 million inhabitants on the way. .
